We have curly shags from Detroit, textured bangs from Austin, and curtain bangs from New York City. We asked stylists to share their most popular styles in salons, so we can bring you the best cuts for women in every part of the country. For all the inspiration, scroll on.

Long and sleek

You don’t have to travel far to get your hair done by Aviva Perea , a celebrity hairstylist who says that crazy-long hair is a hot trend for 2021. She says, “I’ve seen people wear their hair longer than normal.” I think it will be long, straight, shiny and smooth. Although it takes some skill to use a curling iron properly, most people can glide a flatiron down their hair.

Long and sleek

Asking your stylist to cut your hair with a low, slender bottom and a few layers of length is key to make it look more healthy than scraggly. There are several steps you can take to achieve that sleek look at home. Pereon says, “Straight out the shower, you should add a serum while your hair is still wet. This will lock in moisture and help keep your hair smooth.” I love the Extra Strength serum from John Frieda. It contains bamboo extract which keeps my hair hydrated and minimizes frizz.

Easy Waves

Perea said that while carefree waves are a classic for cool girls, this year will see more air-dried hair. A great haircut is the first step to effortless hair. Your stylist should lay the foundation for hair that doesn’t require much styling. Pereon says, “When you sit down in the chair, make sure the layers are evenly layered and heavier from the ears forward.” You should also ask your stylist to ‘cut into’ the layers. Perpendicular cuts in the layers give your hair a place to rest when air drying. Your hair will look bulky if you have too many layers.

Easy Waves

Perea says that you can achieve this look no matter what hair type you have. Perea uses the John Frieda FrizzEase Daily Nourishment Conditioner to protect her hair from frizz. After my hair has dripped, I cut it so that the product is evenly distributed. After the product has fully saturated my hair, I give it a few gentle twists so that it gives me the natural, loose look I want.

Modern Diana

You’re not the only one thinking about a Diana-inspired cut after watching The Crown. Ryan Trygstad is a celebrity hairstylist who cofounded New York’s Mark Ryan Salon. He says that he has been giving his clients a modern version of the iconic princess haircut. He says, “It’s such an innovative look for 2021. It exudes confidence & style for the New Year.” “The cut itself is a mix of a very short, layered bob and a slight pixie cut.”

Modern Diana

Trygstad predicts that other super-short, 90s-inspired cuts will be back. You don’t have to go full-on pixie, but you can try a sleek, chin-length style like this Kaia Gerber one.

Curtain Bangs

You want bangs that don’t require too much effort. Curtain bangs require very little maintenance. “Curtain Bangs are the gateway for bangs, as they’re so versatile,” says Emily Heser from Cutler Salon in New York City. They can be pinned back or grown out if desired, but can also be cut shorter if needed. Click here to see more of our favorite bangs.

Curtain Bangs

Curtain bangs are extremely popular (seriously. Scroll through Insta and you won’t see a single pair). They can be used with any texture. Whatever your hair type, the important thing is to get the right shape. Tim Duenas, a hairstylist at L.A.’s Nine Zero One salon says: “Keep the edges longer then the middle and the end softening starting in the center of the pupils and working your way to the jawline.”

Layers with Chandelier

Are you unsure what to do with your hair? Alan Vuong, owner and operator of Salon Blanc Honolulu, suggests adding a bang to your hair. He says that bangs will be popular in all lengths, but are excellent when paired with thick layers. He says that bangs can be worn together to blend seamlessly with your facial contours, bringing out your eyes. Soft side swept bangs and curtain bangs are all in fashion, but he particularly likes middle part bangs paired alongside his signature chandelier layer cut (the long soft layers seen here). He suggests asking for long layers in the back and smooth layers that frame the face to achieve the same look.

Layers with Chandelier

Long layers can be trimmed with a heavier bang without looking too drastic. Long, chandelier-like layers give the look of a vintage style. Choppy bangs draw attention to your eyes and add a vintage feel. The best of both the worlds.

A tight crop

Although the Big Chop is not a trend, it has been a big year for women who are transitioning from natural to relaxed hairstyles. You can start fresh with a cropped or buzz cut to let your curls grow in all their natural glory.
